Once Upon a Time With an homage to Slim Aaron's iconic society portraits, newlyweds Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers revisit a fortunate past with a glamorous future.
Who: Armie Hammer, 23, actor and great-grandson of industrialist and philanthropist Armand Hammer; Elizabeth Chambers, 27, journalist, chief correspondent for the Human Rights Foundation.
Family Roots He grew up in California, Oklahoma, Texas, and the Cayman Islands. “A little bit of a western meets Swiss Family Robinson,” remembers Armie. She had an idyllic childhood tide-pooling in Half Moon Bay and playing high school sports in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Now, the newlyweds split their time between Los Angeles and Montecito.
Current Projects: Elizabeth just returned from Lima, where she interviewed Hernando de Soto, a Peruvian economist about the importance of property rights in developing countries. “I love my job and there’s nothing like the rush of completing a mission and telling a story–whether it’s a one day story, three week-long coverage, or a single interview.” Armie stars as Cameron Winklevoss in director David Fincher’s Social Network (2010), a story about the founders of the social-networking website, Facebook. He recently met his on-screen alter ego at Winklevoss’ new web launch party.
Local locales: These two can be seen at Lazy Acres stocking up for weekend family meals and Andersen’s Bakery for marzipan treats, lining up at the Arlington Theater for a movie, toasting margaritas at Los Arroyos, or zipping around on their Vespa to their favorite dining spot, Lucky’s.
Silver Lining: “My great-grandfather wanted to do a business deal with a gentleman who he knew loved cars, so he called the president of Rolls-Royce and asked about the absolute best car they were making at the time,” recalls Armie about the priceless automobile used in the shoot. “He bought one of only 27 Silver Cloud IIIs in 1963 and while driving about town, happened to see his business prospect, who stopped him and wanted to talk about the beautiful car. By the end of the conversation, they decided they wanted to do business together. The car then sat, in perfect condition, in a garage until it became my dad’s.”
